Complete Guide to Ram Mandir Darshan in Ayodhya 2025

Ram Mandir Darshan — A Once-in-a-Lifetime Blessing

The consecration of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple on 22 January 2024 was one of the most historic moments in modern India. Millions of devotees have already made the sacred journey to Ayodhya to take darshan of Ram Lalla — the divine infant form of Lord Ram — seated in the magnificent new temple built at his birthplace.

Whether you are planning your first visit or returning for another blessed darshan, this comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know — timings, dress code, how to reach, nearby places to visit, and tips that will make your experience truly divine.

About the Ram Mandir — History and Significance

The Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya is believed to be the exact birthplace of Lord Ram, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the central figure of the ancient epic Ramayan. For centuries, this site has been one of the most revered places in Hinduism.

The newly built temple is a stunning example of Nagara-style architecture spread over 70 acres. The main sanctum (garbhagriha) houses the idol of Ram Lalla — a divine, serene murti of the child Ram, aged about 5 years, made from a single black stone (Shyam Shila). The temple stands 161 feet tall with 5 mandapams (halls) and 392 pillars, each intricately carved.

"Ayodhya is the city where every stone, every alley, every river ghat echoes with the name of Shri Ram. Coming here for darshan is not just a trip — it is a journey that changes you from within."

  • By Air: Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ), Ayodhya — 12 km from the temple. Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru.
  • By Train: Ayodhya Junction (AY) is a major railway station. Ayodhya Cantonment (AYCN) is closer. Direct trains from Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Varanasi.
  • By Road: 135 km from Lucknow (NH27, ~2.5 hrs), 200 km from Varanasi (~4 hrs), 80 km from Faizabad.
  • Local Transport: E-rickshaws and battery vehicles operate near the temple complex. Private cabs recommended for families and senior pilgrims.

Important Rules and Dress Code

  • Wear traditional attire — saree/salwar for women, dhoti-kurta or kurta-pyjama for men. Western wear is discouraged.
  • No leather items — belts, shoes, bags, and wallets made of leather must be kept in cloakrooms provided outside.
  • Mobile phones and cameras are strictly prohibited inside the sanctum sanctorum.
  • The temple provides free cloakrooms and shoe stands — use them and collect a token.
  • Maintain silence and decorum inside the temple. No pushing, shouting, or running.
  • Photography is permitted only in designated outer areas of the campus.

Insider Tips for a Smooth Darshan

  1. Visit on weekdays. Weekends and holidays draw massive crowds. If you must come on a weekend, arrive by 5:30 AM.
  2. Start with Saryu Ghat. Begin your day with a holy dip at Ram ki Paidi before darshan — it adds to the spiritual experience.
  3. Use the VIP pass if available. Senior citizens (above 60), differently-abled pilgrims, and those with medical conditions can apply for priority darshan passes.
  4. Carry a small bag or no bag. Bags are screened thoroughly. Avoid carrying large bags or backpacks.
  5. Stay hydrated. Ayodhya can be hot, especially between March and October. Carry a small water bottle.
  6. Combine with Hanuman Garhi. Located just 400 metres away, Hanuman Garhi should be your first stop — devotees believe Hanuman Ji guards the Ram Mandir and his darshan is essential before Ram Lalla.

What to See Around Ram Mandir

  • Hanuman Garhi: A hilltop temple with 76 steps, dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Stunning views of Ayodhya city from the top.
  • Kanak Bhawan: A palace-temple where Ram and Sita are worshipped together. The idols are beautifully adorned with gold ornaments.
  • Saryu Ghat (Ram ki Paidi): Take a holy dip and don't miss the evening Saryu Aarti — an experience as moving as the Ganga Aarti of Varanasi.
  • Dashrath Mahal: The legendary palace of King Dashrath, father of Lord Ram.
  • Treta ke Thakur: An ancient temple where the idols are carved from black stone said to be from the age of Tretayuga.
